Local knowledge

Tree work in the Sutherland Shire

The Sutherland Shire has more variety than almost any other part of Sydney. Much of it backs onto bushland, with the Royal National Park, Heathcote National Park and the Georges and Woronora river valleys on its edges. Big native trees, such as Sydney red gums, blackbutts and peppermints, grow right up to homes on sloping blocks.

Along Port Hacking and the Georges River, steep waterfront blocks mean trees often have to be climbed and lowered in sections. Around Cronulla and Kurnell, salt wind and storms off the ocean take their toll. We look after removals, pruning, stump grinding, hedging and storm clean-ups right across the Shire.

Council rules for tree removal

Sutherland Shire Council protects many trees on private land through its Development Control Plan, made under the State Environmental Planning Policy (Biodiversity and Conservation) 2021. Whether you need approval depends on the tree's size, species and location, so check before work starts. Much of the Shire is bushfire prone: if your property is in a 10/50 vegetation clearing entitlement area, you may be able to clear trees within 10 metres of your home without council approval. Check your address with the NSW Rural Fire Service first. We can help you work through the council application.

Do I need council approval to remove a tree in the Sutherland Shire?

Do you charge extra to travel?

We are based in Chatswood and work Sydney-wide, including across the Sutherland Shire. Any travel is built into your free quote, so there are no surprises.

Can you remove the stump at the same time?

Yes. Stump grinding can be done on the same visit as the removal, so the area is ready for turf or garden straight away.
